Studies show that the involvement of pharmacists in diabetes management improves adherence to treatment regimens.
“This is of particular importance because, in Type 2 diabetes, patient adherence is only about 60 per cent,” says Holden.
“Unfortunately, lack of public awareness means that many people with the condition don’t take advantage of the services offered by community pharmacies.
“We need to get the message across that pharmacists are a valuable, easily accessible resource for advice and support, helping patients take ownership of their diabetes management and lead the life they want in spite of the condition.”
