National Ambassador, International Men’s Day UK Team
Over the past 15 years, International Men’s Day in the UK has grown from a few local events to one where corporations, government departments and charities are all involved.
Nowadays, there is an annual Parliamentary Debate for International Men’s Day, and around 800 organisations take part. So, what is it and why does it matter?
Rise of International Men’s Day
International Men’s Day was initially created in 1992 and rebooted 35 years ago by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh in Trinidad and Tobago. The date was chosen because it was both his father’s birthday and when the country’s football team qualified for the World Cup for the first time. This represents its very essence: a blend of personal and community.
Three International Men’s Day themes
In the UK, the Men and Boys Coalition charity, has overall responsibility. It has three overarching themes, which allow everyone everywhere to get involved however they see fit.
Organisations, large and small, run mental health sessions and prostate cancer checks for their male staff. This makes a positive difference to the wellbeing and lives of men and boys. Fundraising campaigns, from pub quizzes to sports clubs, promote information to fans, raising awareness and funds for charities. Moreover, schools, councils and campaigners promote a positive conversation about men, manhood and masculinity.

How to get involved
International Men’s Day is a meaningful occasion that highlights serious issues, raises vital funds for charities supporting men year-round and promotes inclusivity for all. Everyone is invited.
On social media, there are thousands of spontaneous and positive comments from the public. In an International Men’s Day thread, Danielle from Scotland memorably posted: “I am so fortunate to have so many wonderful men in my life. I am so grateful for all the love and happiness my fiancé, dad, papa and brother bring. They all give me so much support, and I treasure each moment we have together.” Such sentiments capture the spirit of International Men’s Day and why it matters.
